It’s the least glamorous decision you’ll make, and it’s also one of the ones people get most wrong \u2014 usually by installing something bulky they end up hating, or by skipping it entirely and regretting it at 3am on a remote mountain pass. The good news is that once you understand the four realistic options, the right choice for your setup becomes obvious pretty fast.<\/p>\n

Option 1: Portable Cassette Toilet<\/h2>\n

This is what most campervan owners end up with, and for good reason \u2014 it’s cheap, compact, and it just works. A cassette toilet is a self-contained unit with a fresh water flush tank on top and a sealed waste tank below that you slide out and empty.<\/p>\n

The premium option, and the one that’s taken over serious full-time van builds in the last few years. A composting toilet separates liquid from solid waste \u2014 that separation is the whole trick, because it’s the mixing of the two that creates the smell everyone associates with camping toilets.<\/p>\n

Solids go into a chamber with a composting medium (coconut coir or peat moss) and get stirred with a handle. Liquids go into a separate bottle at the front.<\/p>\n

Units like the Separett or Nature’s Head style composting toilets<\/a> (~$500\u2013$1,000) are the common picks. They’re a real investment, but full-timers who switch rarely go back.<\/p>\n

The key is covering waste completely after each use \u2014 that’s what controls odour. Bag it, seal it, bin it.<\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong> Extremely cheap, no plumbing, no chemicals, easy to replace.
\nCons:<\/strong> Frequent bagging and binning, looks basic, less pleasant for guests.<\/p>\n

Option 4: No Toilet at All<\/h2>\n

A genuinely valid choice, and more common than you’d expect \u2014 especially in smaller vans where every cubic foot counts. The strategy is to rely on public facilities: campsites, service stations, supermarkets, cafes, gyms, and public toilets.<\/p>\n

Most people who go this route still keep an emergency backup \u2014 a bucket, a folding toilet, or a pee bottle for the middle of the night. Because eventually there’s a night where nothing is open.<\/p>\n

Pros:<\/strong> Zero space used, zero cost, nothing to empty.
\nCons:<\/strong> You’re dependent on facilities being available and open, which limits remote camping. Genuinely stressful when it’s 2am and you’re an hour from anywhere.<\/p>\n
